New Home on Wheels

Several things led to the decision to buy a new coach. When we had the Dolphin weighed at FMCA Pomona in March 2006, we were surprised to find that it was overweight by about 1,000 pounds (all those computers and books etc). We also have experienced additional roof leaks that are both frustrating and had to find/fix. A diesel coach would have much greater load carrying capacity and Tiffin Motorhomes has a superb reputation. Although it would cost a lot more, we decided that, with all the money we were saving by volunteering (no campground fees and no gas expenses for staying put) we would go for it. We negotiated with two dealers and got the best price at Lazy Days, a huge dealer near Tampa, FL.

The Tiffin Phaeton 35DH is only seven inches longer than the Dolphin. The full body paint on the exterior is beautiful and the ceramic tile floor, alderwood cabinets and dark gray countertops are stunning. The floorplan is similar to the Dolphin but both slide outs are on the driver’s side. We got the free standing dinette shown below as an option. We also will have a built in central vacuum system.

The Phaeton is powered by a 350 HP Cat diesel engine with a six speed transmission. The Dolphin had 340 HP but less than half the torque of the Phaeton. Bring on the hills!
